* Unemployment had become serious, and H. Gordon Bennett, president of the NSW Chamber of Manufacturers, said the government was not doing enough. Other states could attract more work because labour was cheaper, he said. MANUFACTURING activity ended 2008 on a weak note with a fall for the seventh straight month, according to the Australian Industry Group PricewaterhouseCoopers Australian Performance of Manufacturing Index.
